DESTINATION GUIDE · 2026 / 2027 PLANNING

Study in
Italy.

For Italy, admission, scholarship eligibility, pre-enrolment and immigration should be managed as connected but separate processes. Regional student-support schemes can be particularly important, but financial documents, merit conditions and deadlines require close attention. This guide shows how to build a course shortlist, identify the correct regional authority, prepare evidence and move from an offer to enrolment.

Plan with an expert
Main planning intake

Autumn entry is common; programmes publish their own rounds and applicant-category deadlines.

Admission and funding

University admission and regional / national scholarship applications are usually separate tasks.

Route to investigate

University portal, the correct regional benefits authority and Universitaly where pre-enrolment applies.

01 / TIMING WITH CONTEXT

Know the windows.
Plan the work before them.

These dates do different jobs. A typical window helps you plan; only the applicable official call sets your deadline.

Planning recommendation

12–15 months before entry

Check academic fit, teaching language, entrance tests and national / university awards.

Typical, not universal

Winter / spring planning period

Many international degree and merit-award rounds are published here; the exact university calendar controls.

Typical planning pattern

Summer regional calls

Regional benefits competitions often appear during the summer. Prepare foreign family-income / asset documents before the call closes.

Confirmed, category specific

DSU Toscana 2026/27

The main degree competition closed 7 September 2026 at 13:00. Its doctoral / specialisation window runs 25 September–16 November 2026 at 13:00.

Confirmed, category specific

EDISU Piemonte doctoral / specialisation

The published 2026/27 application window is 28 October–27 November 2026; use the notice for the precise closing time and eligibility.

Route specific

After admission

Complete the applicable Universitaly, consular and enrolment steps; scholarship results do not replace immigration permission.

04 / PREPARE THE EVIDENCE

The budget.
The documents. The details.

Tuition and reductions

Check the course fee schedule and whether an income assessment or scholarship changes the amount due. Do not assume a regional application immediately removes an invoice.

Family financial evidence

Read which family members, tax year, income, property and asset evidence are required. Translation, legalisation and equivalent financial assessment rules can differ.

Cash flow before benefits

Plan for deposits, travel, residence formalities and living costs before a scholarship instalment or accommodation allocation becomes available.

Your starting document checklist

Use this to organise the file; the provider’s current requirements determine the final list.

  • Passport and consistent legal name across your records.
  • Degree or school-leaving certificate, full transcripts and grading scale; provisional evidence only where accepted.
  • Programme-specific proof of language ability, including any approved waiver in writing.
  • Academic CV, tailored statement and references where requested.
  • Funding evidence and a personal budget kept separate from the admission documents.
  • Family income / asset and household-composition documents for the exact reference year required by the regional call.
  • Translations, legalisation / authentication, financial assessment and qualification-comparability documents only in the format your university or authority requires.
  • Universitaly pre-enrolment and consular documents when applicable to your route.

05 / FROM SHORTLIST TO ARRIVAL

One clear step
at a time.

Use the checklist to keep your own place. These are preparation milestones, not a substitute for official approval.

01

Choose programmes and the correct applicant category

Start with degree level, subject requirements, teaching language and the application round available to you. Some programmes use separate instructions for different qualification backgrounds or applicants requiring a visa. Record that category alongside each course.

Check for entrance tests, portfolios, interviews and prerequisite credits. A general university admission page is only a starting point; the programme call defines the actual selection process. Compare course content and professional relevance as well as costs. Keep the first shortlist manageable enough that you can read every instruction and prepare a credible application for each target.

02

Map three separate calendars

Create separate rows for university admission, scholarship / regional benefits and the applicable pre-enrolment or visa process. Add internal nomination, test and document deadlines where relevant. Mark which tasks depend on an offer and which can or must begin earlier.

Use the current call rather than a previous year’s social-media graphic. Label an expected summer regional call as a planning window until the authority publishes it. For each fixed deadline, include the year, timezone and category. A main bachelor’s / master’s competition and a later doctoral competition can have completely different submission periods.

03

Identify the right scholarship authority

Look beyond national awards. Match the university’s location and programme to the correct regional student-support authority, then read that authority’s current competition. Check whether scholarship, accommodation and other benefits require separate selections in the form.

Compare government grants, regional benefits and university merit awards without assuming they can all be combined. Record citizenship, residence, academic progression and financial eligibility conditions. If two awards overlap, ask the provider about compatibility before counting both in your budget. A list of possible awards is not the same as confirmed financial support.

04

Prepare foreign financial documents early

Read the financial-document checklist before asking your family to obtain certificates. Make a table of each required document, issuing authority, reference year, language and authentication requirement. Include the family members and assets specified in the call rather than sending an incomplete personal income statement.

Keep names and addresses consistent across certificates. Allow time to correct discrepancies, translate documents and complete the required authentication. Ask the competent benefits office or designated assistance service about the correct financial-assessment route. Do not use another region’s checklist without comparison, and never alter a certificate to make the family appear eligible.

05

Submit the university application

Use the official programme portal and upload the required academic evidence, statement, language results and any portfolio or test information. Check whether the application fee, reference or evaluation task is part of making the file complete.

Save the final submitted version and payment receipt where relevant. Monitor selection results, interview invitations and requests for clarification. If an offer is conditional on final graduation or document verification, record the condition and the date by which it must be met. Do not confuse a preliminary assessment, a ranking position or an invitation to pre-enrol with unconditional admission.

06

Apply for funding and monitor the ranking process

Complete the separate funding forms by their own deadlines. Check whether an application can be submitted before final enrolment and which later evidence must be supplied. Read the instructions on provisional rankings, corrections and appeals rather than waiting only for an email.

When results appear, distinguish eligibility from an actual funded award or an accommodation allocation. Save the benefit decision and any required acceptance. Record enrolment and merit conditions for payment and continuation. If a document is missing, follow the official correction process within the permitted period; do not assume the authority will automatically ask you to fix it.

07

Complete pre-enrolment and the applicable visa route

Where your route requires Universitaly pre-enrolment, complete it using the university’s instructions and monitor validation. Keep the university, course and personal details consistent with your admission records. Pre-enrolment is part of the process, not a guarantee of a visa.

Use the Italian consular visa portal and the representation responsible for your residence to identify the current checklist. Confirm the required admission, funds, accommodation and insurance evidence for your situation. Leave time for appointments and requests for additional documents. Keep travel plans flexible until permission and the university’s arrival conditions are clear.

08

Plan the first months before money arrives

Build a cash-flow plan that does not depend on a scholarship payment arriving immediately. Include initial rent, deposit, travel, fees and daily expenses. Confirm whether accommodation is guaranteed, conditional or subject to availability and whether you must accept an allocation promptly.

Read the university and housing-provider refund conditions before paying. Keep the official benefit letter and evidence of personal funds available for the relevant checks. Arrange an accessible arrival contact and ask the international office about original documents and any latest arrival date. A sensible funding plan covers the gap between accepting a place and receiving support.

09

Enrol, complete arrival formalities and retain eligibility

Follow the university and competent authorities’ arrival instructions for enrolment and any required residence-permit steps. Check how your final enrolment is communicated to the scholarship authority and whether additional confirmations are needed.

Record academic-credit milestones, reporting tasks and renewal deadlines from the benefit decision. Ask the scholarship office before interrupting study, changing programmes or failing to meet progression requirements. Retain financial documents and copies of every decision. Where a benefit can be reduced or recovered after a condition is not met, understand that risk before relying on it for the full degree.

07 / A LITTLE MORE CLARITY

Questions worth asking.

Is a regional scholarship automatic after admission?

No. Admission and the relevant regional benefits competition have separate eligibility, document and deadline requirements.

Can I use the same financial file in every region?

Only after checking the actual requirements. Reference years, accepted documents, assessment and authentication instructions may differ.

Does Universitaly validation guarantee a visa?

No. The competent consular authority makes the immigration decision.

Does being eligible in a ranking mean housing is guaranteed?

Not necessarily. Read the distinction between eligibility, funded awards and accommodation allocation in the notice.
