DESTINATION GUIDE · 2026 / 2027 PLANNING

Study in
China.

China offers several distinct scholarship channels, including bilateral Chinese Government Scholarships, university-nominated routes and competitive institution-based programmes. The scholarship portal alone may not complete the university application. Start with an eligible degree and language, then identify the exact channel, university requirements and nomination process before building your documents.

Scholarship route

Type A and Type B applications follow different dispatching-authority or university instructions.

University requirements

A university portal, application fee, supervisor evidence or pre-admission document may be required in addition to the scholarship system.

Language and tests

Check Chinese or English requirements and, for relevant undergraduate routes, whether CSCA evidence is required.

01 / TIMING WITH CONTEXT

Know the windows.
Plan the work before them.

These dates do different jobs. A typical window helps you plan; only the applicable official call sets your deadline.

Planning recommendation

12 months before entry

Compare programme language, degree requirements, scholarship channels and eligible hosts.

Country / authority specific

Bilateral applications

Dispatching authorities and embassies set their own national schedules; begin checking in the preceding autumn or winter.

Confirmed past example

University scholarship calls

Deadlines differ materially: the cited Zhejiang 2026 postgraduate call closed on 31 December 2025.

Programme-specific

Additional tests and endorsements

Schedule language evidence, any required CSCA test and supervisor or pre-admission steps before the receiving deadline.

Offer / immigration stage

After formal selection

Wait for the university’s final admission and relevant study-visa documents, then follow the competent visa centre’s instructions.

03 / FOLLOW THE RIGHT FUNDING ROUTE

More than one way
to fund your studies.

01

Chinese Government Scholarship — bilateral / Type A

Government scholarship benefits and eligible study levels follow the applicable bilateral or dispatching-authority call.

Your next action: Find the authority responsible for your country and follow its nomination, agency-number and university-choice instructions.

02

Chinese Government Scholarship — university / Type B

University-selected scholarship routes may include tuition, accommodation, stipend and insurance under the specific regulations.

Your next action: Follow both the scholarship and university portals where required; use only the agency number published by the intended university.

A selective postgraduate route at Peking University with its own academic focus and admissions conditions.

04 / PREPARE THE EVIDENCE

The budget.
The documents. The details.

Covered and uncovered costs

Read the official award components and whether accommodation is provided or subsidised. Travel and personal costs must not be assumed covered.

University charges

An application or admission-processing charge can be separate from scholarship support. Pay only through the official receiving institution’s instructions.

Before enrolment

Allow for translations, tests, required health or visa documents, travel and initial living costs before stipends begin.

Your starting document checklist

Use this to organise the file; the provider’s current requirements determine the final list.

  • Passport and complete qualification certificates and transcripts.
  • Accepted translations and certification in the format specified by the receiving institution.
  • Chinese or English language evidence for the actual programme.
  • Any CSCA or other entrance examination evidence required by the applicable undergraduate call.
  • Study or research plan, academic CV and requested recommendation letters.
  • Supervisor endorsement or pre-admission evidence where the university requires it.
  • Final admission and the relevant official study-visa documentation at the post-selection stage.

05 / FROM SHORTLIST TO ARRIVAL

One clear step
at a time.

Use the checklist to keep your own place. These are preparation milestones, not a substitute for official approval.

01

Select the degree, subject and teaching language

Read the actual international programme list and establish whether the degree is taught in Chinese, English or a combination. Check the required academic background, duration and research expectations. An English university website does not establish the teaching language of every programme.

For graduate research, identify a project or academic group with relevant methods and resources. Create a concise explanation of how your previous training fits. Keep the programme name and language consistent across your university and scholarship applications so your chosen route can actually support the intended study.

02

Identify the correct scholarship channel

Determine whether you are applying through a bilateral dispatching authority, an embassy or a university-selected scholarship competition. Read the instructions for that channel and your applicant category. Do not reuse an agency number from an unrelated university or online example.

Check the permitted university choices, nomination procedure and additional submission requirements. A scholarship-system account is only one part of the process. Record who makes the initial selection and which institution must also receive your admission file before the deadline.

03

Check subject, language and test requirements

Read the current call for the degree level and your intended university. Chinese and English programmes can request different language evidence, while age, previous degree and research conditions can vary by scholarship. Some current undergraduate routes also require CSCA evidence.

Check accepted tests, document validity and whether a university permits an alternative. Do not assume a general English-medium certificate is sufficient without written confirmation. Make a preparation plan that leaves time for official results, translations and any required resubmission.

04

Secure research or pre-admission evidence when needed

Review whether your graduate programme asks for a supervisor acceptance document or another preliminary endorsement. Xiamen’s cited scholarship instructions illustrate how university-specific this can be; another institution may use a different process.

Contact a relevant academic with a concise explanation of your background, research question and fit. Provide an honest CV and focused proposal where requested. Confirm the required signature or approval format with the university. A positive email does not replace the official nomination, admission or scholarship decision.

05

Build a consistent, readable application file

Use the same legal name and academic dates across all forms and documents. Prepare the study or research plan to answer the actual selection criteria rather than submitting a generic essay about studying overseas. Keep achievements and experience verifiable.

Arrange requested recommendation letters and translations early. Follow the provider’s requirements for health, conduct or other time-sensitive documents when applicable; do not commission them so early that they expire before submission. Open every final PDF and check page order, legibility and file-size limits.

06

Complete every required portal and submission

Follow the exact instructions for the current scholarship and university applications. Some routes require both systems, and payment or additional documents may be handled by the institution. Completing one portal is not evidence that the other application has been received.

Keep the submitted forms, application numbers and receipts. Check each dashboard for missing material and monitor official email accounts during selection. Use the earliest binding deadline as your own target, allowing time to resolve a failed upload or a missing endorsement.

07

Distinguish nomination from a final award

Read each decision carefully: a department recommendation, preliminary admission or scholarship nomination may still require further approval. Wait for the relevant final documents and compare the degree, institution, teaching language and start date across them.

Confirm tuition, stipend, accommodation, insurance, duration and any conditions for continuing support. Plan for expenses that the award does not pay and ask when the first payment begins. Keep a financially realistic alternative until the essential academic and funding conditions are resolved.

08

Use the competent study-visa instructions

Identify the Chinese mission or visa centre serving your place of legal residence and follow its current process. Long-term and short-term study use different visa categories. The admission notice and relevant university-issued study documents need to match the intended programme.

Read your own centre’s checklist rather than assuming every country uses an identical submission format. Check any appointment, health or post-arrival formalities before travel. Academic admission is not visa approval, and complex immigration questions should be directed to the competent authority or an authorised adviser.

09

Complete registration and maintain scholarship conditions

Confirm the university’s arrival dates, registration procedure, accommodation arrangements and original-document checks. Keep copies of admission, funding and visa evidence accessible while travelling. Check the local residence and registration steps that apply after entry.

Attend the required orientation and clarify the scholarship’s attendance, progress and annual-review conditions. For research, agree supervision and early milestones promptly. Keep contact details current and ask the international-student office about changes to study, housing or status before a deadline is missed.

07 / A LITTLE MORE CLARITY

Questions worth asking.

Is the CSC portal enough on its own?

Not for every route. A university or dispatching authority may require a separate admission application, nomination or supporting documents.

Does every English-taught programme waive language tests?

No. The current university and scholarship rules determine accepted evidence and any alternatives.

Does a supervisor’s email mean I have the scholarship?

No. It may support the application, but final admission and funding decisions are separate.
